Clinical laboratories must be licensed by State and Federal
agencies. In order
to operate, a laboratory must comply with the requirements of the State
and
Federal regulators and inspectors regarding personnel qualifications,
operating
protocols and proficiency testing performance. ACS is licensed by the
states of
New Jersey and New York, College of American Pathology (CAP), and by
the
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as an interstate laboratory.
Accreditation is recognition by professional peers that
a laboratory meets high
standards of medical reliability over and above the minimal requirements
of
licensure. Accreditation is given to those laboratories that maintain
satisfactory performance on external proficiency testing programs which
assess
the ability to analyze unknown specimens received periodically throughout
the
year. These results are reviewed on an on-going basis. ACS has participated
in
proficiency testing programs from the College of American Pathologists
(CAP),
American Association of Bioanalysis (AAB), the New Jersey State Department
of
Health (NJSDOH) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
